International Coastal Cleanup efforts bring volunteers to the shores of Lake Erie

(Your Erie.com) Hundreds of volunteers gathered along the shores of Erie County on International Coastal Cleanup Day to collect litter and protect the environment.
The event, part of a global initiative to keep waterways clean, saw participants travel to various locations between the Ohio and New York state lines. Last year, over 1,300 volunteers collected more than 3,000 pounds of litter, highlighting the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
“It gives those volunteers a sense of ownership over an area that they don’t necessarily own, but want to be good stewards of” said Don Benczkowski, Lake Erie Region Program Director for Keep PA Beautiful.
Walter Iwanenko, President of Gannon University, emphasized the importance of Lake Erie, stating, “We have this incredible resource, Lake Erie, on our doorstep and we want to make sure it’s around for generations to come.”
