Grant Funds Tree Plantings

(The Daily News) Thanks to a Healing the Planet grant from Keep Pennsylvanian Beautiful and The Giant Company, the Huntingdon Borough Tree Commission (HBTC) and Juniata College were able to plant new native trees throughout the college campus and Huntingdon Borough.

“In total, the grant was $2,000, enough for Huntingdon Borough and Juniata College to each buy $1,000 worth of native tress,” said Celina Seftas, sustainability director at Juniata College. “They came from two local nurseries, the Tuckahoe Tree Farm and Potted Memories Greenhouse.”

Juniata College was one of 37 organizations to be awarded part of the nearly $120,000 given for the planting of native trees. The trees were planted in Huntingdon Borough Nov. 1.

“We applied for the grant as a community partnership with Huntingdon Borough,” said Seftas. “Trees face a lot of challenges in urban areas. We wanted to plant more trees when we observed a lot of the trees being hurt by things like road salts and insect damage.”
