Tire Collection Event Planned

(The Daily News) After a two-year hiatus, the Huntingdon County Conservation District will once again hold a tire collection from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Huntingdon County Fairgrounds.
“Thanks to a Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful grant, we’re able offer this event and charge people a lot less than they would pay other places,” said Huntingdon County Conservation District watershed specialist and Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful coordinator Maggie Ritchey.
The grant will cover half of the cost to recycle the collected tires.
“It will cost community members $2 to recycle one car or truck tire, but the fee is actually $4, so the grant money helps the community to get rid of tires responsibly,” said Ritchey.
She said there aren’t a lot of local opportunities to get rid of tires.
“It’s also important to recycle them responsibly. A lot of places won’t take them because they can only be recycled a certain way,” she said. “We recently collected 100 illegally dumped tires along a two-mile stretch of the Juniata River, so right there is $400 in tires.”
