College Internship Program York, Salem Square
Salem Square is one of three examples of communities in their second year. KPB believes that Salem Square's familiarity with the internship program enabled them to better design an ideal project for the internship. Additionally, the partnerships that were created in the program's first year were used again and further developed during the program's second year.
Ryan Emerson, The Salem Square Community Association, and their project partners set out to transform an underused public green space into a community gathering space. The team developed a landscaping plan that called for a brick pathway, benches, a sign, and a small flower bed. Throughout the ten week internship an impressive amount of in-kind and monetary donations were collected for the project. Once the rehabilitation of the green space was completed the project team hosted a well attended re-dedication event.
This project did an exceptional job of engaging area residents, the City of York, local organizations, and businesses in the project. The partnership chose the project, created the design, helped implement the improvements, and paid for the majority of the project's materials. For every dollar allotted for project materials, nearly five dollars were raised through a combination of in-kind and monetary donations. The intern selection and pre-project meetings greatly contributed to this project's success.
