College Internship Program York, Olde Towne East
Like Salem Square and Harrisburg, Olde Towne East's internship project
is in its second year. KPB observed that in its second year, the
YWCA was better prepared to work with the interns and that their
previously established partnerships benefited the program.
With input from local community leaders, the interns in York developed
a service learning curriculum for the YWCA's Jr. Park Rangers program.
The purpose of the program was to "educate urban youth about gardening
and neighborhood beautification through engaging them in the education
and construction of a neighborhood peace garden."
Hands-on learning, proved to be an effective way to educate youth,
serve the community, and have fun all at the same time. The YWCA
hopes to continue the program and apply the curriculum to other
programs. Additionally, organizations like PHS and PRC have expressed
an interest in using the curriculums.
