College Internship Program

West Chester

The West Chester Project had two primary aims; 1) to work with the community to develop and implement landscaping improvements on the Melton Center Property and 2) to collect feedback from the community and develop a comprehensive landscaping plan for the field located next to the Melton Center. The interns successfully completed both of these tasks with minimal supervision from their community partners. Most notably, the project produced two mosaic planters, a bench, and a landscaping master plan for the Melton Center.

The interns did an excellent job of finding and engaging community partners in the project. Despite not having an Elm Street Manager to oversee their day-to-day activities, the interns successfully engaged local residents and organizations in the planning, implementation, and follow up of the projects. While the interns were unable to establish a group of residents to commit to maintaining the garden beds around the Melton Center, they did inspire the community and left them with a landscaping plan. After receiving the plan, the board members gave every indication that they plan to implement portions of it.
