College Internship Program Kennett Square
The Kennett Square interns successfully engaged the local community
in the process of beautifying and mitigating the erosion and pollution
of the Red Clay Creek. Based on the results of an initial survey,
the interns selected five feasible projects that enhanced the aesthetics
of the neighborhood and were low cost and light maintenance solutions
to storm water runoff. The projects included a rain garden, cleaning
up and stabilizing a hillside and a gully, hosting a rain barrel
workshop, and preserving an historic 100+ year old oak tree.
Of the surveys that were initially distributed, the residents returned
more than 50 percent. Additionally, the partnership inspired residents
to clean up their own properties and established a group of residents
who committed to maintaining the rain garden.
Like most successful projects, the partnership had to overcome
a number of obstacles. Most notably, the interns ran into a situation
where one organization originally gave them verbal permission to
go ahead with the rain garden project, then changed their minds,
and then eventually agreed. Everyone involved learned the valuable
lesson of gathering written agreements before beginning any work.
