College Internship Program
Friendship, Pittsburgh
Street Lighting Program
Friendship is an urban enclave located some three miles east of
Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle, and takes its name from Friendship
Avenue, an east-west street running through the middle of the neighborhood.
Its houses are large, square homes designed for professional-class
families in the Victorian period. Friendship experienced severe
disinvestment beginning in the 1960s, but has been the focus of
urban revitalization efforts since the early 1990s.
This summer's internship project in Friendship intends to make
the neighborhood a safer and more desirable place to live by establishing
an Urban Street Lighting Campaign. The intern will work closely
with the Friendship Development Associates, the Friendship Preservation
Group and The Community Technical Assistance Center to create an
inventory of street light existing conditions. In addition the intern
will conduct outreach activities to educate residents about the
importance of porch lighting, as well as assist in the distribution
of long life bulbs and solar powered security lighting to homeowners.
The culmination of the internship will be the coordination of a
Porch and Alley Light Up the Night event.
