College Internship Program
Meadville, Read Between the Signs
Sign Art Murals
PennDOT and Allegheny College's Arts & Environment Initiative
Since 2001 Allegheny College's Arts & Environment Initiative
has partnered with PennDOT on an ongoing collaborative community
based public art project. Read Between the Signs (RBTS) is a 1,200'
x 9' sculptural relief made entirely from reclaimed roadsigns. RBTS
depicts the gently rolling hills of the Allegheny Mountains and
the French Creek watershed, as well as the rural landscape surrounding
the city of Meadville. When complete, the project will present a
collective cognitive map of our community representing what is most
valued locally. To date we have completed just over 700' of the
project, and anticipate that it will take an additional three years
to complete. Images of the project can be found by clicking here.
Located along Route 322/6/19 at the gateway into Meadville, RBTS
has stimulated local revitalization efforts that place the arts
and the environment at the heart of community and economic development
efforts.
Interns will assist in community engagement efforts, develop designs
to integrate imagery from local school children into plans for this
year's additions to the project. Once designs are developed interns
will then fabricate and install the new section(s) of this rural
roadside intervention.
