
2005 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Co-sponsored the 2005 Great PA Cleanup when over 140,000 volunteers
spent more than 500,000 hours cleaning 11,000 miles of roads,
12,000 acres of parks, 3,500 miles of streams; planting trees & flowers;
and improving city lots.
- Kicked off the KPB “Community Enhancement Recognition” project
with the first category of “Community Greening Award.” The
Pennsylvania Horticultural Society graciously worked with other
KPB partners in using the PHS program in Southeast PA as the
model for this statewide project.
- Conducted a pilot program in
the Cities of Harrisburg and York to determine the effectiveness
of using the skills and enthusiasm of college interns as a catalyst
to engage residents in caring for their community. Interns helped community residents
build & plant gardens and design & install community
art murals and mosaics.
- Initiated an new long term effort: “PA Roadside
Aesthetics - a Strategic Approach” A cooperative project
with the Joint Conservation Committee of the PA Legislature and
PENNDOT officials of all levels.
- Expanded and improved the KPB website
with more information and resources for everyone.
- Held the second “KPB Summit” where
community leaders, business representatives, public officials,
and individual citizens attended the morning plenary to hear
representatives from Maryland and New Mexico talk about how their
states handle roadside aesthetics, and afternoon breakouts on
best practices of enforcement and community outreach.
- Expanded the KPB alliance with
the addition of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Pennsylvania
Builders Association as KPB board members, and AAA Mid-Atlantic
and PBA as new KPB Business Council member.

2004 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Co-sponsored the first Great PA Cleanup as
part of the Great American Clean-Up with over 140,000 volunteers
participating in all 67 PA counties
- Sponsored the first statewide “KPB Summit”
for community leaders and interested residents including a workshop
with Dr. Doug McKenzie Mohr, internationally known author of “Fostering
Sustainable Behavior – An Introduction to Community Based
Social Marketing”
- Established a library of resource materials
relating to the 3 R’s - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; litter;
& beautification and categorized the materials for appropriate
age and use setting, and match with PA’s academic standards
- Worked with the municipal police training
center to develop and distribute Fact Sheets on PA litter laws
and the importance of enforcement in the 2005 local police training
manual
- Researched existing studies & reports
on the economic impact of litter and beautification. Engaged
an intern to review & summarize the materials.
- Initiated a showcase for litter prevention,
recycling & beautification at the PA Farm Show Complex in
Harrisburg.
- Certified as the 22nd state affiliate of Keep
America Beautiful, Inc.
- Received the “2004 William Nash Award”
for outstanding programming as a new Keep America Beautiful affiliate
- Received the 2004 “Leadership in Sustainable
Partnerships” award from the Pennsylvania Resources Council
