Daily Courier - Westmoreland Cleanways wants to invite Boy and Girl Scouts, church youth groups, school environmental clubs, 4-H groups or any youth organization to register for this year's Fugitive Tire Roundup. The program, running every Saturday in April, both educates Westmoreland County youth of the problems created by the improper disposal of garbage and instills a sense of community stewardship while getting messy and having fun at the same time.
Since 1995, youth participants in the event have cleaned up more than 55,000 illegally dumped tires. These fugitive tires are tires that have escaped proper disposal and end up along roadways, waterways, in fields, wooded areas and wetlands. Groups are paid a "bounty" for each of the first 200 passenger tires collected (maximum bounty of $150).
