PA CleanWays of Fayette County, an affiliate of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, was formed in 1995 with support from the Fayette County Recycling Office. The affiliate focuses on cleanups of illegal dumps, special collection events for disposal of hard-to-recycle items, and educating the public on the detriments of illegal dumping and littering. Since our inception through the end of 2009, PA CleanWays of Fayette County has held 43 cleanups removing and properly disposing 597 tons of trash as well as recycling over 5,100 tires! Our most recent special collection events have accumulated over 13 tons of non-recyclable hard-to dispose items.
Working with local conservation groups, the public school system, and local residents, the Fayette County Affiliate has an extensive network of volunteers. Since 2005, our volunteers have donated 1,297 volunteer hours helping to make Fayette County a better place to live, work, and play! Additionally, volunteers can also 'adopt' sites, which includes monitoring and disposing of any additional trash that accumulates at a cleaned dumpsite and along sections of municipal road. There are a total of thirty-seven adoptions in Fayette County.
Unfortunately, illegal dumping continues to be a problem in the county. The Fayette County Illegal Dump Survey was completed in 2005 by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to identify illegal dumpsites within the county. The survey results show that Fayette County has 163 illegal dumpsites that total an estimated 735.8 tons of trash. Our affiliate is working diligently to clean up these dumpsites, such as the dumpsite along Mud Pike Road in Georges Township where we removed 515 tires.
Please check our Calendar of Events for upcoming cleanups. If you would like to become a volunteer for the affiliate, please contact Warren Hughes, Affiliate Coordinator, at 724-430-1200 x212, or by e-mail
