Keep Somerset County Beautiful, formerly PA CleanWays of Somerset County, was formed in 1993 with support from residents concerned about illegal dumping in the county. As an affiliate of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, we focus on cleanups of illegal dumps and educating the public on the detriments of illegal dumping and littering. Since our inception through the end of 2009, Somerset County has held 13 cleanups removing and properly disposing of 146.19 tons of trash as well as recycling over 1,500 tires!
Keep Somerset County Beautiful has a strong base of committed volunteers, including the Somerset County Probation Department. Since 2005, we have had a total of 100 volunteer hours with a value of over $1,900! Volunteers can also 'adopt' sites, which includes monitoring and disposing of any additional trash that accumulates at a cleaned dumpsite. There are a total of six adoptions in Somerset County.
The Somerset County Illegal Dump Survey was completed by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful in 2008 to identify illegal dumpsites within the county. The survey results show that Somerset County has 210 illegal dumpsites that total over 540 tons of trash.
Please check our Calendar of Events for upcoming cleanups. If you would like to become a volunteer for the affiliate, please contact Todd Crouch, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, Program Manager, at 877-772-3673 x103 or e-mail.
